Populus hyrcanica I. Pal. the fossil species was formed and developed in the Paleogene period, especially in the Eocene epoch (about 56 - 33.9 million years ago). Leaf traces of this ancient poplar species are widely found in Paleogene (Eocene) floristic complexes and Lower Eocene / Middle Eocene sediments of the South Caucasus, including the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
